A Union of Purpose
Founded in 2017, Effectual Words began as a ministry of presence—a way to bring the healing power of being truly heard to communities fractured by misunderstanding. What started as pastoral counseling has evolved into a comprehensive training organization serving schools, hospitals, police departments, and families across the nation.
Lynwood and Assiyah Spell are partners in life, ministry, and mission. Their journey began in 2008 at the Atlanta University Center, where Lynwood attended Morehouse College and Assiyah attended Spelman College, both graduating in 2012. They were married in 2013. This "SpelHouse" bond laid the foundation for a shared commitment to excellence, service, and community uplift. uplift.
They continued their education together at Princeton Theological Seminary, earning their Master's degrees in 2017. This unique shared path has equipped them with a profound theological and psychological framework for understanding human connection.
Beyond their work with Effectual Words, Assiyah serves as a dedicated public school math teacher and special educator, bringing practical, on-the-ground experience in child development and educational psychology. Her background in positive psychology and contemplative spirituality enriches their training curriculum, particularly for educators and parents.
Together, they are the proud parents of five children (and one who is with the Lord). This deep personal experience of raising a large family grounds their teaching in the messy, beautiful reality of daily life. They combine their professional expertise with their lived wisdom to teach "Structured Empathy"—a practical, nonviolent communication method that transforms how people relate to one another.
